Work Experience - Student Placement

The City of Charles Sturt Library Work Experience – Student Placement Program aims to help secondary and tertiary students gain exposure to real world skills to complement their study.

All students, who apply for the program, must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Be currently studying in Year 10, Year 11, Year 12 (or equivalent) or at an Australian educational institution.
  • Be covered by appropriate insurance through your school/ institution for the duration of your placement and provide paperwork to verify this.

If you do not meet all of the above criteria we are unable to proceed any further with your application.

What are the costs?

There are no costs involved.

What do you need to know?

Your application needs to include your resume and a cover letter. Please ensure that your letter covers details such as:

  • Your current course
  • The date you are available from
  • The total number of days you require, and
  • most importantly the reason/s why you want to complete your placement within the City of Charles Sturt Library Service. 

The following lists potential work experience areas within the Library Service:

  • Customer Experience: Front of house service, off and on desk tasks.

  • Collections: Learn how to catalogue an item, selection, processing.

  • Literacy & Learning  - Programing & Events: Observe & assist in with set up and programming a session (Story Time, Baby Time, youth, adult literacy, digital events.

  • Outreach: Join a staff member in home service, mobile library run, home service selection, and outreach sessions.

  • Communications and Engagement: Introduction and overview of engagement activities.

How to apply?

  1. Registration of interest is required at least 6 weeks prior to the preferred date of placement.
  2. Please read Work Experience at the Library: Information for Students.
  3. Complete the Application form.

What happens next?

The number and timing of placements offered depends on the capacity of the library to provide effective on the job experience. The City of Charles Sturt Library Service endeavours to accommodate as many students as possible but is unable to guarantee that all will be placed. Our library team will notify you regarding the outcome of your placement enquiry.

If you have submitted an application and no longer wish to be considered for the Work Experience Program you must email and advise that you would like to withdraw your application.
