Council Meetings

Council ChamberWelcome to Charles Sturt Council Chamber. The following information is intended to make your visit more interesting by explaining some of the Council meeting procedures.

Council Members

The Council of the City of Charles Sturt has 17 members, comprising the Mayor and 16 Councillors (2 from each of the 8 Wards).

The Mayor is elected by all voters in our City. The Mayor presides over all Council meetings and is the official spokesperson for the Council.

All Council members have been elected by the community to represent your interests. Like you, they are residents or ratepayers and share your concerns about quality of life and the provision of services and facilities.

Council Meetings

Council meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month (fourth Monday only in January and second Monday only in December) at 7 pm. Mayor Angela Evans presides over these meetings.

Council Meetings are held at the Civic Centre, 72 Woodville Rd, Woodville. If a meeting falls on a public holiday, it will be held the following evening.

Copies of the meeting agendas are available near the door to the Council Chamber - please take one. Agendas, reports and minutes for all meetings are available at the Council Office or on the website.

Further details on Council Committees, including their Terms of Reference, membership, meeting times, agendas & minutes can be found here.

Meetings Open to the Public

Generally all meetings of Council and its Committees are open to visitors and the media.

There are rare occasions, however, where the Council or one of its Committees may resolve that the meeting be closed so that an item can be considered in confidence. All members of the public are required to leave the meeting for the duration of that particular discussion.

Items for which the meeting may be closed include personnel or legal issues, personal hardship of a person, industrial or contractual matters or property or commercial transactions in which the Council has an interest.

These items are considered at the end of the meeting so as not to inconvenience members of the public who are attending the meeting.

Workshops and Informal Gatherings

The City of Charles Sturt recognises its duty to conduct all business in public unless a specific Confidentiality order (made in public) is resolved by the Council or Committee.

Occasionally Council uses workshops or briefings to provide training, better understand an issue or explore a topic in an informal environment. Typically staff or a relevant expert, which may be a paid consultant, will provide information and be available to answer questions to the workshop gathering.

Such workshops are not used to make decisions. All decision making is conducted at Council meetings.

Public Involvement

Members of the public are not permitted to enter into the debate at meetings and must remain silent at all times. However, there are various ways you can have your views made known. These include letters or petitions to Council. You can also request a deputation to address a meeting of Council or one of its Committees. This request should be in writing addressed to the Chief Executive at least a week before the meeting.

You do not need to stay for the entire meeting, but may leave quietly at any time you choose.

Council Officers

Meetings are attended by a variety of Council officers, including the Chief Executive and the Leadership Team, who are there to provide advice to the Council members, present reports and answer questions.

We hope you enjoy your visit. If you would like more information, speak to one of the Council Officers at the meeting or phone the Council offices on 8408 1111.
